"The Lady, or the Tiger"

In the story "The Lady, or the Tiger," the princess tells her lover to open the door that will make him tiger food. The author tells the reader that she is semi-barbaric, and this complicates he decision on whether to let her lover live married to another woman or to let him be killed by a tiger. Her love for him was very strong, but so was her jealousy to keep him to herself. She could not bear to see him with another woman, nor could she bear to see him killed. After hard deliberations, however, her jealousy took control. Unable to see him with someone else, she motioned to the right, to the door with the tiger behind it.
